Students gave each other a critique of where they could add more, what was working well, and if they could tell what the building would sell. Here are some of the finished work. Some in crayon and some in oil pastel.

My student teacher Mrs. Carroll taught 2nd graders about Optical Illusions and had them create their own using paint and paper weaving. First students had to paint a gradient on a sheet of paper, then the next week they created a paper loom and cut their painting apart. They put the painting back together inside the loom and created amazing Op Art! Designing the strips on the back of the painting paper: Painting the gradient: Cutting out the loom: Weaving the painted papers into the loom: The Final Artwork: Here are some photos of Flynn and Smith's classes working. Here are some photos of the finished masks! Wearing the mask is also a lot of fun! Some people chose to cut out eye holes, others created paper eyes so it was more of just a sculpture. 2nd graders cut out a body in motion and added lots of details to show how the figure is moving. Some are dancing, playing sports, or performing karate.
We have spent many weeks stitching and sewing on burlap. Second graders learned the back stitch, couching stitch, satin stitch, and how to add beads if they wanted. They chose either a bug or a butterfly as their design. Here are some of the finished projects!
2nd graders sculpted animals using clay. Here is what they looked like before they were glazed! After they were fired students glazed them with either realistic colors or colors influenced by Oaxaca wood sculptures. Here are some examples of the Oaxaca animals that we looked at:
Here are some Fall landscapes painted by 2nd graders! They learned about American artist Grant Wood, and landscape vocabulary like horizon line and ground lines.
Second graders cut out and layered butterflies on top of each other to create a collage inspired by Molas. The project will be sent to the Square 1 Art fundraiser.
