First students learned about evergreen trees and how to draw needles. They drew them into styrofoam to create a printing plate. Then we used white printing ink to create 4 copies of our evergreen needles onto construction paper that was folded in half. The next week, once the cards were dry, students cut out red cardinals to glue onto their cards.
First graders created leaves using oil pastel and watercolor. We looked at leaves and made sure we included veins in the drawing. They listened to the "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert and then created a collage of a figure using their painted leaves.
Students drew their family using on a light colored marker first. They had to draw all if the shapes to show who is taller and who is shorter. Once their whole family was draw they could use other colors to add details like clothing, accessories, hair color, and pets.
The cutting and gluing! The finished houses! They turned out so well they just had to be displayed around the school. There is a display in the library and in the front lobby.
After practicing how to cut out a deciduous and and evergreen tree, 1st grade students created a personal winter landscape collage. Next, we used our new skills to create a large mural together.
Students learned many paper collage techniques to create their collages. They rolled a 3D tube, pleated wings, and tore clouds. They even cut their own circle moon starting with a large square and cutting off the corners first. Students drew rows of petals, outlined in sharpie, and used Mr. Sketch markers to color flowers close-up. The project will be sent to Square 1 Art for our fundraiser.
